What is the difference between SEO and AIO?
SEO optimizes for ranking in search engine result pages. AIO (AI Optimization) optimizes for being cited as a source in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. They overlap heavily but require different signals at the margins.
SEO and AIO share fundamentals: crawlability, content quality, structured data, page speed. They diverge on what gets rewarded. SEO rewards keyword targeting and link authority. AIO rewards factual density, entity recognition, and presence across multiple authoritative sources.
SEO ranks pages, AIO cites sources
In Google, your page ranks at a position. In ChatGPT or Perplexity, your page is one of 3-7 cited sources for an answer. Position-based ranking rewards a single canonical page; source-based citation rewards being mentioned across many pages and contexts.
Both reward structured data
Schema.org markup helps both. FAQPage and HowTo schema help Google show rich results AND help AI engines extract structured answers. JSON-LD is the lingua franca of machine-readable web content.
AIO rewards brand presence more
For AI citation, brand search volume has a 0.334 correlation coefficient (the strongest single predictor). Backlinks matter for SEO; brand mentions and entity associations matter more for AIO. The fix: get mentioned in industry publications, not just linked from them.
